THE REALM OF SMOKELESS FIRE: Chapter 8: THE MUGHARRIBUN (A Strain of Jinn)

Mokhtar Stork

Prophet Muhammad is reported to have asked A’ishah whether anyone had seen the Mugharribun. Not knowing anything about the subject, she asked, “What does Mugharribun mean?” Muhammad (s.a.w.) replied, “They are those in whom there is a strain of the Jinn.” (Abu Dawud). What we are being introduced to is a strain or species of Jinn.
Islamic scholars have come up with several explanations based on assumptions and references to Qur’anic verses and Ahadith in a general and literal context. One said that if a person does not recite supplications (dua) at the time of having sex, the Mugharribun will associate itself with the act of intercourse. These are assumption made by them. Just image: do you believe that most Muslims remember to recite God’s name when they are about to have sex? Most do so spontaneously out of lust and desire. If what was said is true in the literal context, we should be having billions of Mugharribun born out of Muslim wedlock. Think about it?
Let me offer you a more realistic, practical perception in line with reality. On the Malay Archipelago (Malaysia where I come from and in Indonesia), we have a community known as "Orang Bunyan". These people are the result of inter-marriage between jinn and humans. They are unseen to normal humans, only to those who are capable and have been allowed to do so.
My wife's uncle was married to one. You could hear the children laughing but if you went over, you only saw her uncle. He ended up being blind because his Bunyan wife was jealous and did not want him to have a human wife. He was finally rescued from his Bunyan wife by my wife’s uncle, a well-known ustad in Singapore.
I knew a bomoh (a common name generally used to depict a Malaysian spiritual healer) who had a relationship with them and he took me to visit them. It was a fascinating experience. We were in their world for an hour or so but were reported missing at the police station in Pahang for seven days.
I firmly believe that the ‘Bunyan’ of the Malay Archipelago are the Mugharribun mentioned by Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.) in Hadith. They are indeed the result of inter-marriage between jinn and humans. [Mokhtar Stork: The Realm of Smokeless Fire. Chapter 8 (The Mugharribun) and Chapter 9 (The Bunyan): book being completed].
